Best Dessert Spots in San Jose — A Treat Lover's Guide

A treat lover's guide to the best dessert spots in San Jose, California. Where to find the sweetest treats and how to track your favorites with Treatly.

Treatly boba character

San Jose might live in San Francisco's shadow, but its dessert scene has its own distinct identity, shaped by the South Bay's incredible Vietnamese, Filipino, Mexican, and Indian communities. I visited San Jose about 15 years ago when I tagged along on my dad's work trip, and we used it as a base for a trip to LEGOLAND. As a kid, I remember getting lots of ice cream everywhere we went. This is a city where global sweets are everyday treats.

Vietnamese dessert culture

San Jose is home to the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam, and the dessert scene reflects it. Che (Vietnamese sweet soup), banh bo (honeycomb cake), and Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk are everyday staples in neighborhoods around Story Road and Tully.

Filipino bakeries and beyond

The Bay Area's large Filipino community means San Jose has excellent Filipino bakeries serving halo-halo, ensaymada, ube everything, and leche flan. These are rich, distinctive desserts you won't find in most US cities at this quality level.

Boba capital of the South Bay

San Jose's boba scene is enormous — possibly the densest concentration of boba shops in the US outside of Los Angeles. Every major intersection seems to have at least one tea shop, and the variety of styles and flavors is staggering.
