How to Find Hidden Gem Dessert Spots in Any City
Skip the tourist traps and find the spots locals actually love. Here's how to hunt for the best treats wherever you go.
The best dessert in any city is almost never the place with 4,000 Google reviews and a line around the block. It's the bakery in a strip mall, the taqueria that also makes incredible flan, the boba shop on a side street that only regulars know about. Finding these spots is half the fun.
Look where the locals are
Skip the tourist zones. Head to residential neighborhoods, college campuses, and the streets right off the main drags. If a place is packed with locals at 3pm on a Tuesday, it's probably good. If it has a neon 'open' sign and hasn't been renovated since 1997, even better.
Use social media differently
Instead of searching 'best desserts in [city]' on Google, search the city name plus specific treats on Instagram or TikTok. Local food bloggers are goldmines. Look for accounts with under 10k followers covering your target city. They're usually more honest and more specific than the big listicle sites.
Ask your barista
Baristas know their neighborhood. They know which bakery just opened, which ice cream shop is underrated, and which place to avoid. If you're already getting coffee, just ask. 'What's the best dessert within walking distance?' has led me to some incredible finds.
Log everything, even the misses
Not every hidden gem is actually a gem. Sometimes the strip mall bakery is just okay. Log it anyway. Knowing what didn't work is just as useful as knowing what did. Your Treatly map becomes more valuable the more pins it has, even the 2-star ones.
