How to Photograph Your Treats Like a Pro
Simple tips for taking better photos of your desserts, coffee, and boba for your treat journal.
You don't need a fancy camera to take good treat photos. Your phone is more than enough. But a few small adjustments can make the difference between a blurry snapshot and a photo that actually makes you want to eat the treat again when you look back at it months later.
Natural light is your best friend
The single biggest upgrade you can make to your treat photos is lighting. Natural light, specifically indirect sunlight, makes everything look better. Sit near a window if you're inside. If you're outside, slight shade is better than direct sun which creates harsh shadows. Avoid flash entirely, it flattens everything and makes food look unappetizing.
Get the angle right
For flat items like cookies, waffles, and cakes, shoot from directly above (flat lay). For drinks like boba and coffee, a 45-degree angle works well because it shows both the top and the side. For tall items like ice cream cones or stacked pancakes, get down to eye level so the height is visible.
Keep the background clean
You don't need a styled set. Just make sure the background isn't distracting. Push aside clutter, napkins, and random objects. A clean table or countertop is all you need. If the table is messy, just get closer to the treat and let the background blur naturally.
Snap fast and eat
The best treat photos are taken in the first 30 seconds. Ice cream melts, foam settles, chocolate drips. Don't overthink it. Take 2-3 quick shots from slightly different angles, pick the best one, and get back to enjoying your food. Treatly's background removal works with any photo, so even an imperfect shot becomes a great sticker.
