The Best Gas Station Snacks, Ranked

Not every treat comes from an artisan bakery. Sometimes the best finds are at a highway rest stop.

Treatly cookie character

Look, not every treat entry in your journal needs to be from a craft patisserie. Some of the most honest entries in my Treatly are gas station snacks eaten in a parking lot at 11pm. Those count too.

S tier: fresh-baked cookies from Buc-ee's

If you've been to a Buc-ee's, you know. The cookies are legitimately good, especially the chocolate chunk ones that are still warm. This is the benchmark for gas station treats. Anything from a Buc-ee's bakery section deserves a real rating.

A tier: the surprisingly good donut case

Some gas stations have a bakery case with fresh donuts delivered that morning. These are hit or miss but when they hit, they're a 4-star experience for a dollar. The apple fritters especially. Always check the bakery case.

B tier: packaged but respectable

Hostess Donettes, Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies, and Nutty Buddy bars live here. They're never going to be a 5, but they're consistent 3s. You know exactly what you're getting, and sometimes that reliability is exactly what you need at mile 300 of a road trip.

Why you should log them

Gas station treats are part of your treat story. They capture a moment, a mood, a specific point on a specific road trip. Five years from now, that 2-star packaged danish will remind you of driving through west Texas at midnight, and that memory is worth saving.
